Sivagiri means 'Shiva's peak' which might have been derived from the hill lock with a Shiva temple located in the town. Its economy is dependent on the agriculture and textile industries. Sivagiri is well connected with Erode and Karur, the neighboring towns.

The place where the temple exists now was garden of flowers – Poonthottam in Tamil. Amman rose from this place with a smile. Hence, She is praised as ponkaliamman. The temple is in the midst of Thalayanallur, Sivagiri, Erode.
