Welcome to Arulmigu Sri Ponkali Amman Temple
Sivagiri has an average elevation of 199 metres (653 ft). It is located 25 km (16 mi) to the south of Erode, 35 km (22 mi) to the north-west of Karur, 40 km (25 mi) to the west of Namakkal and 45 km (28 mi) to the east of Tirupur. Sivagiri means 'Shiva's peak' which might have been derived from the hill lock with a Shiva temple located in the town. Its economy is dependent on the agriculture and textile industries. Sivagiri is well connected with Erode and Karur, the neighboring towns.
The place where the temple exists now was garden of flowers – Poonthottam in Tamil. Amman rose from this place with a smile. Hence, She is praised as ponkaliamman. The temple is in the midst of Thalayanallur, Sivagiri, Erode.
There is no evidence to show the antiquity of the temple but is believed to be famous for at least a thousand year. The temple was renovated by the people of the place and was saved from dilapidation. The temple stands majestically amidst a pleasant environment.
